Gun violence is a serious public health problem that affects millions of Americans every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 39,707 firearm-related deaths in 2019, including 14,414 homicides. I do believe everyone should have the right to have a gun but, your gun must be legally registered.
There are many factors that contribute to gun violence, such as mental illness, poverty, racism and domestic violence. However, there are also proven ways to prevent and reduce gun violence, such as community engagement, like Big Brothers, and Big Sisters. The Care program help improve not just the risk of violence, but also multiple other risk factors for teens and young adults.
We need to demand that our lawmakers take action to enact these policies and support these programs. We also need to raise awareness and educate ourselves and others about the causes and consequences of gun violence. Together, we can make our communities safer and healthier for everyone.
2 Laws to Support:
1- Universal background checks; Are a common-sense measure that require all gun buyers to undergo a criminal history check before purchasing a firearm from any seller, including private sellers.
2- Safe storage laws; Are another simple way to reduce gun violence, especially among children and teens. These laws require gun owners to store their firearms securely when not in use.
Quote for Today:
