Why Philadelphia Needs a Yard Space for Car Drifting and Racing.
Car drifting and racing are popular hobbies for many teens and adults in Philadelphia, but they also pose serious risks to public safety and property. In recent weeks, there have been several incidents of illegal street racing and drifting that resulted in injuries, deaths, and arrests. For example, here is one incident that happen on Philly streets.
1- On June 5, 2023, an 18-year-old man was shot and killed by a state trooper after he allegedly struck two troopers with his car during a drag racing event on Interstate .
These events show that the current laws and enforcement are not enough to deter illegal street racing and drifting in Philadelphia. While I understand the need to crack down on these dangerous activities, I also believe that there is a better solution: creating a yard space for car drifting and racing for teens and adults in Philadelphia.
A yard space is a designated area where car enthusiasts can practice their skills and enjoy their hobby in a safe and controlled environment. It would provide the following benefits:
1- It would reduce the temptation and incentive for illegal street racing and drifting on public streets and highways, which would improve public safety and reduce traffic congestion.
2- It would create a positive outlet for teens and young adults who are passionate about car culture and want to express themselves creatively and competitively.
3- It would foster a sense of community and camaraderie among car enthusiasts who share a common interest and respect for each other’s vehicles and abilities.
4- It would generate revenue for the city through fees, taxes, sponsorships, and events.
This example show that a yard space for car drifting and racing can be a viable and beneficial option for Philadelphia. It would not only address the problem of illegal street racing and drifting, but also create a positive impact on the city.
I urge the city officials and the car community to consider this proposal seriously and work together to make it happen. Philadelphia deserves a yard space for car drifting and racing. Just like the city did for the Skateboard community, let’s work together and get it done.
