In 1870, the Philadelphia Mint sent dies to San Francisco, but they accidentally left the mint-mark off the three dollar gold piece. The workers at the San Francisco hand cut a small S into the bottom of the reverse die and struck on two, Three dollar gold coin pieces. The 1870-S graded coin sold for $5,520,000 at the PCGS website on November 2023.
